Courses

In Building Construction Estimating we teach students specific details on how a general building contractor derives the cost of a project before it begins, and how the estimate fits into the total construction process. We cover such areas as determining labor productivity and wages, selecting equipment and assigning productivity rates and costs, acquiring specialty contractor prices, and assigning overhead costs and profit. The material is presented from the point of view of a general contractor working on a competitively bid stipulated-sum (lump-sum) contract. However, other contract methods and the effects they have on the estimating process are also discussed.

Construction is an industry regulated by laws and this course teaches the process of packaging and presenting documents for various approvals and permitting from government agencies.

The course develops technical writing skills necessary to communicate information gained through a process of technical or experimental work. The course highlights the factors that determine the degree of technicality of the language and concepts involved. You will learn how to write different technical reports, e.g., laboratory reports, research reports, design and feasibility reports, progress reports, consulting reports, etc. The course also approaches several language, structure, style, and content issues that you can encounter while reporting the results of your research.

The student is taught the overall planning, coordination, and control of a project from beginning to completion. Construction administration is aimed at meeting a client’s requirement in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project. The construction industry is composed of five sectors: residential, commercial, heavy civil, industrial, and environmental. The subject addresses the process of interim and final accounts, occupancy and closing documentation.
